The salt firing at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary, operates as an atmospheric firing. Unglazed ceramics can be placed in the kiln because in high temperatures around 1200°C salt gets introduced into the kiln and reacts with the heat. The salt turns into a gas when heated and forms in reaction with the clay pieces a highly glossy layer. To illustrate the transformative power of wood-firing, the ceramics were photographed before and after the salt-firing.
